4. How to choose your surfboard? Key tips.

After seeing our boards perform in Indonesian waves, one question often comes up: How to choose the right board?
Here are some advice shared during this trip, notably by Jao.
-
Take into account his surfing level
That's the basic principle.
A beginner surfer will need a board:
- stable,
- with volume,
- take-off tolerant.
Conversely, a more experienced surfer might opt for a more maneuverable, more responsive board, suited to hollow or fast waves.
To start or progress smoothly, the formats Mini Malibu Or Longboard are often an excellent option, like our Mini Malibu 7'6 modular or the Modular 9' longboard.
-
Adapting your board to the wave conditions
During the trip, Jao emphasized one key point: You don't surf the same board depending on the conditions .
- Soft waves → more volume and glide.
- Hollow waves → more control and precision.
This is where versatile boards really come into their own. Shapes like the All Round Fish allow you to surf in a wide range of conditions without constantly changing equipment.
Discover, for example, the All Round Fish 6'6 or our packs of two boards to vary the fun depending on the sessions.
-
Consider transport, strength and durability
Traveling in Indonesia with equipment proved it to us once again: the solidity and the practicality are essential.
A modular board allows for:
- to travel more easily,
- to limit the environmental impact,
- and to surf more often, everywhere.
That's why our boards are designed to last, with spare parts so as not to have to buy a whole new board and suitable bags such as the rolling bag or the bag-pack.
5. Our return from our surf trip: what are our takeaways?
This surf trip to Indonesia was a real eye-opener. For several weeks, we had the chance to surfing our entire range of boards in real, varied conditions, sometimes perfect, sometimes more demanding. Models already well-known… but also boards still in development , like our 7'6" foam softboard , tested directly on Indonesian waves. A key moment for us: seeing how each board reacts, session after session.
From a logistical standpoint, this trip also confirmed a key point: Portability changes everything . Having your modular boards stored in one bag It's a real luxury when you're constantly traveling. While there, we traveled a lot by Scooter , the simplest and most efficient way. And in this context, the Newave backpack It has established itself as the best compromise: practical, compact, easy to carry, perfect for moving from one spot to another without any hassle. Fewer constraints, more freedom… exactly the spirit of the surf trip we love to experience and share.

6. So, which is the best board to buy?
