The Genesis of Newave – Fines on the Train

La genèse de Newave – Amendes dans le train

A few years ago, when Ewen and Hadrien were about to start 2nd grade As students prepare for their final year of preparatory school, a good week of swells is forecast for the Landes region during the last week of summer vacation. The year ahead looks tough and short on holidays, so to make the most of the waves, it's now or never.

So it's decided, they're going on a last-minute surf trip! After a few phone calls to their friends, a crack team is formed and the logistics are organized. Everything looks promising.

But now the SNCF (French National Railway Company) wants to throw a wrench in the works. While meeting Hadrien in La Rochelle, Ewen gets a fine on the train because of his surfboard. Indeed, Luggage larger than 1.30m is prohibited on TGV trains, even with extra luggage fees!

Despite the fine, the surf trip is going well, the waves are cooperating, and the sessions are coming thick and fast. Our two founders are surfing an average of 6 hours a day and enjoying these last moments of summer with their friends.

Unfortunately, SNCF wasn't finished with Ewen, because on the way back he got another fine on the train! This time he broods a little, and that's when he gets the idea of making detachable surfboards.

This idea would stay with him for a long time, as it was only 4 years later that he launched Newave. The objective was clear: design a high-performance, easy-to-assemble, and above all, train-compatible folding surfboard.

Today, Ewen and Hadrien have the solution for their surf trips. The Newave boards, once packed in their bags... SNCF's conditions . Indeed, the Newave transport bag is less than the maximum dimensions of 90 x 130cm, even with a 2m70 board inside.
