Are you hesitating to switch to a Newave folding surfboard?
You are not alone. Innovating in a sport as deeply rooted as surfing inevitably raises questions.
Does it hold up? Does it float? Do I lose any sensation? Is it worth the price? This article is designed to answer all these questions, unfiltered, with humility and transparency.
At Newave, we've created a range of takedown surfboards designed for modern, nomadic, and responsible surfing. And we're going to explain everything to you, piece by piece.
1. How do I assemble the Newave detachable board?
It's very simple, quick, and you don't need any special tools!
Ready to assemble your board in a flash?
All you need to do is assemble the pieces of the board, push in and turn the pins, then clip them together to secure the board.
What if the board comes apart in the water?
This is THE question we hear most often. But the answer is clear: no, your board will not fall apart in the water.
Our fastening system has been specifically designed to withstand pressure, movement and shocks, even in the most demanding conditions.
A reinforced locking system: the pins
Each board is equipped with a double locking system. Once locked, it cannot be detached until it is manually activated.
➡️ Example: Our 3-piece mini Malibu was tested at Uluwatu in 3m waves (Bali). No breakages, no losses, just pure gliding. If you want to see it, we filmed our surf trip and it's available right here: [ WE SURF ULUWATU WITH A DETACHABLE BOARD – YouTube ]
And on the test bench, the Newave demountable board gives way to 285 kg of traction, it is not broken, only the pins have failed.
2. Are Newave boards strong and robust?
How resistant are they to powerful waves?
When people talk about takedown boards, the first reaction is to doubt their durability. And that's understandable. However, our boards are designed to last, whether in the lab or in the water.
Demountable boards, tested and approved
Newave boards have proven their robustness in bench tests and real-world conditions: they are as strong as traditional surfboards. In fact, during experiments conducted at Cobra, our manufacturer, we validated their durability through a stress test exceeding 300 kg, which meets the resistance criteria of a standard surfboard.
But the ultimate test is the ocean. Hadrien and Ewen had the opportunity to put the Newave boards through their paces in real-world conditions. They traveled and adapted to the waves of the Atlantic coast, as well as those of Scotland, Sri Lanka, and Bali. Tested by numerous surfers, the Newave boards are attracting attention and impressing with their performance, comparable to traditional surfboards.
Are there any water leaks?
Newave's "W"-shaped fastening system is the key element that revolutionizes surfboard transport. It's the result of over two years of research and development and hundreds of hours of testing. Our fastening systems are patented. They resist water ingress, pressure, sand, impacts, and temperature variations. High-density foam surrounds each joint to guarantee a perfect seal.
What are the surfing/flexing sensations like?
Everyone who's tested it will tell you: you can't feel the joint. The system was designed to follow the board's natural flex, without any interruption in the glide.
🎥 A very comprehensive explanatory video is available on our YouTube channel, Hadrien, the technical director of Newave, puts the boards to the test in the video: Classic board VS Newave board – YouTube.
Spoiler: only one of the two boards broke
3. An accessible innovation?
Why does the Newave folding surfboard cost this price?
Yes, buying a Newave board is a smart investment that saves you money. But it's a smart, long-term, and upgradeable investment. Our boards are more expensive than some entry-level options, but here's why:
2 patents filed: innovative and unique in the world, therefore more expensive to manufacture than a classic board
Sustainability : Thick lamination and the use of quality materials justify a higher manufacturing cost.
Versatility: with only 7 parts you get 9 different boards. A classic compact board is difficult to repair and often requires multiple purchases to vary the feel; on the contrary, in the long term, the 'Newave' board is an economical and evolving solution.
No need to buy a second board: one board, multiple configurations. Upgrading your setup? Simply add a piece, no need to replace the entire board.

You can store your Newave folding surfboard in your car trunk, eliminating the need for roof racks. Furthermore, you'll save fuel, as a closed trunk consumes up to 20% less fuel than a vehicle with a roof rack, thus reducing your environmental impact.
Our boards also fit in a suitable carrying bag: the backpack or the Newave boardbag!
Newave's demountable boards promote and encourage sustainable mobility: because when traveling, our system is efficient. You can take your board by train, carpool, hitchhiking, or bus.
Indeed, on an SNCF TGV, the permitted luggage size is 1m20, even a Newave longboard fits in any luggage compartment!
