Finding suitable storage space for surfboards can be a real challenge, especially for those living in small spaces or without a garage.
Large surfboards and longboards, in particular, are especially bulky, making storage even more difficult. Here's a brief overview of the main storage problems surfers face. At the end of the article, we'll present the solution to all these problems.
What can you do when you live in a small apartment?
The problem: When you own a 9' longboard (2m70 long, I remind you), it's not easy to keep it with you, and even more so if you live in a small apartment.
To reach your front door, you'll have to complete a three-step obstacle course! First, good luck not getting your board stuck between the swinging doors of the entrance hall! If you make it through this stage, you'll face a difficult choice: the narrow stairwell or the elevator? Often, it's not really a choice since most elevator shafts are 2 meters high. So, it's off to the stairwell, and there's another challenge. You have to find the exact angle so the board doesn't hit either the tail or the nose. And on a spiral staircase, that's a very difficult feat. But if you manage it without having to repair your board and you successfully get through the fire door and your apartment door, you'll finally be home! Quite an adventure, isn't it?
But then, where do we put this board? Under the bed? Hang it on the wall? No doubt that's another challenge. Let me tell you, once it's put away, we realize that this big board is exactly where it belongs.
What are the alternatives for surfboard storage?
To avoid such an ordeal before and after each surf session, several options are possible:
- Renting a garage close to home. It's expensive but it works well!
- Leaving it at a friend's house who has space is fine, but what if he doesn't feel like going surfing tomorrow?
- You can leave it in your car. But, well, for a longboard, you need a big, a very big car. And then you have to be sure that nobody will want to steal the board.
