In this article, we reveal the behind-the-scenes of an express surf trip to Bali! Four days of perfect waves at the mythical spots of Impossible or Uluwatu, with scooters and tips to transform a surf trip into an unforgettable adventure.
Are you ready? Let's go!
A business trip to Thailand
It all started with a business trip to Asia. Ewen and Hadrien, the two protagonists of this adventure, are also the founders of Newave Surfboards. Their company manufactures surfboards that can be disassembled into three pieces, easily packed in a backpack, ideal for transport.
Upon arriving in Thailand, Ewen and Hadrien realize they're only a three-hour flight from Bali, the waves are forecast to be perfect all week, and their planned meetings have been cut short. It takes them barely a few seconds to decide: this is a unique opportunity to organize a last-minute surf trip. The plane tickets are booked in minutes, with a departure scheduled for that very evening!

Arrival at Denpasar Airport in Bali
Upon arriving at the airport, Hadrien and Ewen realize the advantage of traveling with a collapsible surfboard. Indeed, These boards travel in the hold like regular luggage, which allows them to avoid a surcharge of €150 per board. Furthermore, they only need one piece of hand luggage: their backpacks fit easily on top of the bags containing the boards.
At Denpasar airport, the two friends retrieved their bags without any problems. They took a taxi to Uluwatu and saved money again: No need for a taxi van to transport the board bag; both bags fit in the taxi's trunk . Pretty convenient, right?
The next day, it's finally time to surf!

First spot: Impossible in Bingin
The first spot the two friends visit is Impossible at Bingin . Easy to access, parking is free for scooters. The wave is less crowded than its neighbors, Bingin, Padang and Uluwatu, and the atmosphere in the water is pleasant.
This wave is exceptional, and it lives up to its name: it's incredibly fast and requires pumping to generate speed and get through the sections. Making turns is a real challenge! Also, watch out for the reef, which is always close at low tide. Although the rocks aren't too sharp, some waves are barely 50 cm deep. So, it's best to be a good starfish when you land in the whitewater!
Ewen and Hadrien are discovering the wave and gradually learning to tame it with their takedown boards. By surfing a fast wave on 7'6", they can quickly find a direction at the takeoff and gain a little time on the shortboard surfers at the start. This also gives them the opportunity to perform nose turns on this fast wave!
Scooter adventure + surfing in Balangan
Ewen and Hadrien also ventured to explore the joys of scootering in Bali. With their Newave bags on their backs, and without having to pay for the surfboard rack option, they covered the few kilometers separating the various surf spots on the southern peninsula.
One afternoon, the two friends decided to go surfing at Balangan. This spot is one of the few in Bali suitable for beginners, with several surf schools located on the beach. If you're a beginner, this is the place to go! For more advanced surfers, the offshore reef allows the swell to curl into a long, fast, hollow left, offering barrels and maneuverable sections. The wave is also very fast. It's often necessary to move quickly to get through the sections!
In Balangan, Ewen and Hadrien enjoy an exceptional sunset session. The waves are a good size, and Ewen even breaks his board's leash!

The legendary Uluwatu spot
To conclude their surf trip in style, Ewen and Hadrien choose to Surfing the legendary Uluwatu break . This magnificent left-hander wraps around the tip of the peninsula and offers several sections. Surfers focus on Corner, the hollowest wave, which provides beautiful barrel sections at low tide. At Uluwatu, the average skill level of surfers is high, and although the waves are exceptional, it's not always easy to find a spot. This spot is therefore reserved for experienced surfers! Also, be careful not to hit the reef, which is very close at low tide.
The two friends take turns enjoying a magical morning, catching some of the best waves of their lives, while also experiencing some memorable wipeouts.
